Los Angeles Times kills Harris endorsement, editorial board resigns

Wednesday, October 23, 2024

Los Angeles Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong blocked the newspaper's editorial board from endorsing Kamala Harris for president, days before the Washington Post made a similar decision. Editorials editor Mariel Garza resigned in protest, telling the Columbia Journalism Review: "I am resigning because I want to make it clear that I am not okay with us being silent. In dangerous times, honest people need to stand up." Two more editorial board members—Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Greene and Karin Klein—also resigned. Greene wrote he was "deeply disappointed" and that Trump "has demonstrated such hostility to principles that are central to journalism—respect for the truth and reverence for democracy." Critics noted Soon-Shiong's business interests requiring FDA approval could be affected by a Trump administration.
