NBC's U.S. broadcast of the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony downplayed crowd booing directed at Vice President JD Vance. When Vance appeared on screen during the Parade of Nations, the stadium erupted with boos that were clearly audible on CBC's Canadian feed, with commentator Adrienne Arsenault noting "those are a lot of boos for him—whistling, jeering." NBC's coverage was notably quieter, with announcers simply saying "Vice President JD Vance" before moving on without acknowledging the crowd's hostile reaction. At least once before, at the US Open in September, broadcasters have been asked not to air negative crowd reaction to the President. NBC and its corporate parent have significant matters in front of the Trump Administration, including investigations, broadcast licenses, and potential mergers.

The Olympics is a major international event that has often had international political significance. Booing of the Vice President by an international crowd is an important event that Americans have a right to know about. As the only broadcaster with the rights to cover the Olympics in the United States, NBC's decision not to mention the crowd's reaction and possibly to downplay it deprived Americans of important information. Given the significant matters the company has before the administration, they owe the public transparency.
