University of Virginia President James Ryan resigned after the Department of Justice demanded his removal as a condition for resolving a federal investigation into the school's DEI practices. The DOJ accused Ryan of rebranding rather than eliminating DEI programs. Ryan cited risks to employees, researchers, and students who could lose jobs, funding, or visas as a reason to resign. It marked the first time the Trump administration successfully forced out a public university president.
